What you would expect from Lonely Planet a good basic guide to all the well known places in the D R.This is the latest version and updated in October 2014 and the only disappointment for me with the book, which is why I lack a bit of confidence in it, was that the Chikungunya virus didn't get a single mention in the health and safety part of the guide. This is THE biggest health and safety story in the country over the last year or so. The virus arrived in the DR in December 2013. So either the authors haven't been here as recently as they claim or they didn't talk to any Dominicans when they were here.
LP never lets me down, and this is no exception! Has great suggestions from cheap to classy/expensive. They made it easy to plan my trip and provided the material in a non bulky form. I won't ever use another travel guide again.
You can't go wrong with Lonely Planet. This guide is very complete and accurate. The recommendations and descriptions of restaurants, hotels and stores are up-to-date. I helped me choose a plan for a limited stay in the country, and gave me various options for unconventional, non all inclusive like beaches.
Easy to read and small enough to take on vacation with me when I went to the DR. Gives a great overview of all the hot spots throughout the DR. I went to the local book store and found that this book has the BEST overall description of the country!
There are several other travel books that are better organized and actually have pictures. This book is basically a list of every restaurant, place to stay and thing to do but doesn't rate each thing as far as a "have to see" like other books. Won't ever buy another lonely Planet travel book again.
